What’s Next in Cyber Attacks

The past few months have been relatively uneventful in terms of cyber attacks and viruses and malware. It kind of makes you think that something big is coming. “What’s next in cyber attacks?” you may be asking. This time last year, in 2017, we saw cyber attacks such as WannaCry, which was a ransomware attack in which hackers demanded money, ransom, to release files from their unlawful custody. In fact, many would argue that 2017 was the year of cyber security attacks. So let’s see what’s happened so far in 2018 and look at what could be next in trends:

  • Meltdown & Spectre – In January, we talked about Meltdown & Spectre, two vulnerabilities exposed on virtually every computer chip manufactured in the last 20 years. Read more about it here.
  • Cryptomining malware on the rise – While ransomware had been dominating the world of cyber attacks, this may not be the case anymore. Instead, cryptomining malware has seen a recent boom. Cryptomining malware looks to take advantage of the processing power needed to mine cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. Thus, if you are invested in Bitcoin, practice extra caution to evade hackers.
  • Antivirus protections not enough – With all the cyber attacks that occurred in 2017, many people lost faith in their antivirus protection software. They trusted these programs to keep them and their information safe, but vulnerabilities and attacks slipped through the cracks. Now, having realized this, many people and businesses are upping their security measures in an effort to combat and prevent further attacks on their systems.
