Do you have any bad habits? No, I’m not talking about biting your nails; I am talking about your online habits. For example, do you use the same password for everything? Or maybe you visit questionable websites? Or, worse yet, do you forget to check for a secure link before entering your credit card information while online shopping?
This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to bad habits and online browsing. Maybe you think you are playing it safe or maybe you know that you are taking part in risky behavior. Either way, here are some unhealthy online browsing habits that you may want to break!
A Word on Passwords
Passwords have a purpose. They are there as a deterrent to stop malicious behavior on your account, in your email box, or online. There are a lot of ways to mess up passwords. Here are our biggest pet peeves. Do not use the same password for every account. If a hacker figures it out for one, they know how to access everything. In addition, do not store your passwords in a spreadsheet that can be found if a hacker gets into your computer. The same goes for writing your password on a sticky note on your desk. Use a password manager to help you come up with a strong secure password for each of your accounts.
Questionable WiFi Connections
Public WiFi is great when you want to get some work done at a coffee shop, airport, or hotel. What’s not great is the security that comes with public WiFi. Consider using encryption and a VPN or Virtual Private Network when you need to access your accounts while out and about.
Forgetting to Update
We all see the prompts come up on our screen, right? Install the latest version of software now. Please do not ignore these or the security patches that get sent to you. They are important in order to maintain a high level of security. The latest software means your device has the latest version of security software.
Visiting Low-Quality Websites
Avoid websites that look malicious. What does that look like you ask? In short, websites that tout free videos, free gambling, or free software websites. If it looks “off” don’t click.
