Two Cyber Security Myths You Need to Forget

April 4, 2019 8:16 am

Last month, the news in the world of cyber security was the discussion of “Two Cyber Security Myths You Need to Forget.” Mainstream media, ZDNet, and Homeland Security reported that the wrong attitude toward the risk and complexity of cyber security could leave businesses – both large and small – open to attack.

The two myths that stand in the way of business leadership understanding the threats posed by cyber attacks were identified by Ciaran Martin, CEO of the National Cyber Security Centre, the cyber arm of GCHQ. In short, the two myths include the ideas that:

“Too many organizations still believe that all cyber attacks are targeted, meaning that unless they’re specifically selected as the objective of a hacking campaign, they won’t fall victim.”

and

“Some board-level executives don’t engage with cybersecurity because they believe it to be too complicated.”

Martin warned there are still businesses that believe they will not be in the sights of cyber criminals, that they aren’t at risk from suffering the negative effects of a cyberattack. This is true of small and medium-sized businesses that falsely believe they are under the radar of hackers. In reality, the viruses are not necessarily meant to target a specific company but rather vulnerabilities that are found.

Too many companies feel that cyber security is too complex an issue to be dealt with. Many business leaders feel those complexities would cause mistakes to be made, or that something may be missed. Security experts, however, suggest that merely keeping up to date with patches that are released can save many companies from being vulnerable. For example, many companies never installed the patch after the WannaCry virus was released. A similar virus was released two years later and companies still had not installed the patch!
