Technology to look out for in 2020

October 24, 2019 11:08 am

Microsoft has just made a surprise announcement saying that they’re coming out with a new folding smartphone, the Surface Duo. It’s expected to come out in late 2020 among many other exciting tech trends.

What else can we expect to see next year? Lots of emerging technologies, from autonomous vehicles to more accessible 5G mobile networks, to start.

Keep up with the latest trends and take a look at what the future has in sight!

Facial recognition

Although facial recognition is something that has been available on mobile phones for a number of years, at this point, there is a controversial thought that this form of technology will continue to grow. We say controversial because there is that ongoing concern over privacy.

The new “computer vision” will involve systems identifying the likes of objects, places, and people, that are collected by a camera system. So as we progress in the world of automated cars, which is something we are going to see, this will be fundamental.

Artificial intelligence (AI)

Another area that we’ve watched build over the years is AI, which is continuing to take on more and more human tasks. Over the next year, we can expect to see AI providing more tailored services so that it is more accessible to more companies as, at the moment, it is an expensive proposition for a company to design and develop on their own.

Autonomous cars

You’ve heard of Tesla’s self-driving car, but they currently have certain limitations. The next step is for self-driving cars to have the function to brake and change lanes without human intervention. We can also expect to see this technology extend to trucking and shipping, rather than be limited to regular cars.

Did you know that Waymo, Google’s sister company, has just completed a trial in California in which they transported over 6,200 people over the course of a month through an automated taxi service?

Predictive medication

Wearable devices such as smartwatches are predicted to play a bigger role in detecting health issues and not just monitoring activity levels. Treatments will also begin to have a more personalized touch (aka precision medication), and doctors will be able to prescribe medicines that are more closely aligned with what each individual needs.

Using AI, health care professionals are able to gain a better understanding of how different people react to different treatments and how some bodies are better at fighting off certain diseases than others.

Progressive web apps

Who would think, in this day and age, that we would be moving away from apps? Well, not completely. Rather than downloading and storing individual apps on your phone, there’s thought that we’re going to head in a more cloud-based or progressive web app direction.

5G networks

We have seen 5G begin to make an appearance, however, it is going to become more accessible to a wider number of people. The 5th generation of mobile internet connectivity is really going to take off next year and, with it, we can look forward to faster download and upload speeds as well as more stable connections.

Extended reality

Think of Snapchat filters and Pokémon Go. These are in the realm of digital immersion and, until now, have been limited mostly to the world of entertainment. However, virtual reality is soon going to become more prominent in the workplace and used for interacting with customers and training employees.
