Forbes wrote a great article about how the food industry is being revolutionized with technology. Some of us wouldn’t assume the two would go hand-in-hand so well. In reality, technology has changed the way we do things in all industries, and in food especially. Let’s dive in:
When it comes to food, there’s much that goes into designing technology, creating a process, and machine packing. Technology and machine robotics have made this aspect of food production and shipping much easier.
This particular article notes that “the use of machines in the food industry also ensures quality and affordability. By using machines, it drives down the costs of keeping the food fresh and increases productivity.” This sounds like a win-win, right?
When you hear this, you may have some safety concerns about these machine automated tasks. The truth is, machine-oriented production actually helps eliminate safety concerns for more dangerous jobs.
For example, the article highlights a tech company in 2016 that designed a program for butcheries to use robots in their meat cutting. This helps to eliminate injuries when cutting the more difficult meats. Butchers no longer have to handle these heavy and unsafe machines; instead, they are automated and easier to work than before.
With this shift in technology comes a shift in consumer awareness and curiosity. We now see consumers focusing on how companies are sourcing their ingredients, packaging their products, and going about waste disposal. Food waste has been a huge concern among consumers.
Forbes brings to our attention that newly developed apps and technology help combat food waste. With food tech, we can cut back on the waste, and get the surplus of food from small businesses to places where it’s needed. As consumer interests shifted towards environmentally friendly habits, technology allowed the food industry to hone in on this, and appeal to this niche has since grown.
An app called Copia “uses its extensive food waste reduction dashboard to connect businesses with surplus food to local shelters, after-school programs, and other nonprofit organizations. Copia’s analytic software manages and tracks their surplus to save money and reduce their overall food waste.”
This technological revolution of the food industry still may seem somewhat new for some of us and can be challenging to understand. But technology is a driving force in many industries and has drastically changed the way we buy, sell, and operate completely. With cutting costs and reducing production time, the importance of incorporating technology into industries alike has been a no brainer for experts in recent years.
We can learn a lot about the nature of technology and business, from just one example with technology in the food industry. Do you see an opportunity for technology within your business? Technological advancements allow for business to change, grow, and adapt to consumer needs more easily. You can do this on any size scale, for small and medium-sized businesses as well.
