Did you hear about the FaceTime bug found in the iPhone? A 14-year-old student stumbled across the bug, even before Apple did. When trying to group call his friends during a video game, Grant Thompson of Arizona discovered something quite surprising about his iPhone.

When Grant called his friend on FaceTime, they didn’t answer, so he added a second call to another friend. This caused the first call to pick up, and allowed Grant to hear the conversation his friend was having on the other line. He then tested this multiple times to ensure it wasn’t just a glitch, and the hack repeated itself several times. Grant’’s friends and mom confirmed that this was indeed something to be communicated to Apple.

Apple’s Response To the FaceTime Bug Discovery

Apple is now rewarding Grant for his recognition of this bug. He will receive a gift towards his education, and the Thompson family will be paid. Apple didn’t include how much they would be gifting, but we can imagine how appreciative Apple must have been for Grant finding this bug. Apple was unaware of this FaceTime issue, and they included an apology in their statement:

“We again apologize to our customers and we thank them for their patience. In addition to addressing the bug that was reported, our team conducted a thorough security audit of the FaceTime service and made additional updates to both the FaceTime app and server to improve security.” -The Washington Post

Though Apple took security measures and communicated with the public about this bug, New York Attorney General Letitia James has been put on the case to investigate the bug. Referring to the Thompson family, Attorney General James reported in a press release that the bug was reported and brought to Apple’s attention “more than a week before it was shared widely with the media and the company took action.” James and her law office are investigating due to the slow response and public address of this bug.
