Staying Productive at Work

In an office setting, some days may be harder than others to feel productive. Life can get in the way sometimes, which makes it hard to get work done. Read on for some tips on how to stay productive at work:

Clean Your Desk

If there is clutter in your environment, it can negatively impact your productivity and mood. Clean your desk of any clutter and designate “homes” for things you can’t throw away. Organize papers, put pens and pencils into a holder, and neatly tuck away exposed wires. Additionally, regularly empty the wastebasket underneath your desk. Having a neat and tidy space is the first step toward productivity.

Don’t Eat at Your Desk

It may be convenient to eat at your desk – you may argue that you can get work done – but doing so can actually inhibit productivity. You can easily get “lost” on the Internet when you take a break at your desk. You can also overeat and not even realize it. Instead, take a break away from your work. Designate a time to eat lunch in the break room. This will eliminate the potential of a mess in your workspace. It’s healthy to get away from your work for a few minutes every couple of hours. Go and talk to your coworkers, or just get up and walk around, leaving your work and thoughts at your desk. This clears your head and gets the blood flowing again and gets air in your lungs.

Remove all Distractions

You probably don’t realize how easily distracted you can get while at work. Now that smartphones have become a facet of everyday life, when you get a notification, you instinctively reach for your phone. This adds up throughout the day, and you don’t even realize you’ve spent an hour on your phone while at work. Put away your cell phone when you’re trying to get work done. Break the habit of relying so much on your cell phone. Unless it’s an emergency, the person on the other end can wait.
We all want to stay productive at work, but it really comes down to your environment. Take the time to clean up and organize your area. Take small breaks and eat in a designated area only, and put your cell phone out of sight so you’re not so easily distracted by it. You should soon see an increase in productivity.
