Spam Control for Email

December 11, 2019 11:02 am

Is your email inbox out of control? If you are like the average business professional, then you probably have an inbox that fills up daily with work email, newsletters, advertisements, promotions, sales, gimmicks, and, yes, spam.

The average business person looks at their email 15 times per day. Given that number, which we suspect is low, email has become a force that interferes with productivity. Short of removing email from your devices, it is hard to get rid of the temptation to just take a peek throughout the course of the day. What makes this all that much worse is the amount of spam that clogs up our email boxes. How can you keep a lid on the number of spam emails you receive? Check out our suggestions.

Train Your Computer To Identify Common Spam Emails

When you check your email, it is tantalizingly easy to click through each and trash those that are not worth your time. Instead of rushing through the “click, click, click” procedure you normally do, we suggest training your email to identify spam. You can do this by always marking the unsolicited email as spam. This is how the automatic spam filters learn to identify spam and filter it out. How you do this depends on your client. For instance, if you’re using Gmail’s website, click the Report spam button in the toolbar (the icon looks like an exclamation point inside a stop sign).

Hide Your Email Address

If your email is exposed anywhere on the internet spammers will find it and use it to their advantage. Don’t publish your regular work or home email on the web unless you absolutely have to. If you do find that you have to use a real email address ever, use a different address for that purpose. Signing up for a disposable email address is easy through spamex and mailshell.

Avoid Opening Strange Emails

The best way to avoid having your email address captured in this way is simply to avoid opening emails from senders you don’t recognize. If you happen to open an email and find that it is spam, mark it and then trash it. Do not start clicking on anything within the email or you will be setting yourself up for more spam and potentially malicious viruses.

Use a Spam Filter

There are many spam filters to choose from depending upon the level of sensitivity you desire, type of filtering, and of course cost. Here is a great breakdown of the Top Spam Filters from this year to get you started.
