Andrew Yang is running for the presidential election in 2020. What makes him so interesting? His views on technology, automation, and the driving forces of our economy.
On December 6th, Andrew Yang met with Erin Winick at the Work Awesome conference in NYC. The discussions of future work and communication led to us learning about how Yang is preparing the economy for the technological transition we’ve already begun to see.
When Trump became president, we automated 4 million manufacturing jobs. Yang says it’s no surprise to anyone that we’re about to do the same with retail workers, call centers, fast food workers, and so many other jobs.
Yang is not against this automation, rather focused on helping us prepare. As automation would be beneficial in so many ways, we have people who are still working in these jobs now, and many would be out of work when these services become automated. He said, “My mission as president is to make [automation] as good a thing as it can be for as many people as possible.”
The estimated time frame for this automation transition is within the next five to ten years. When asked about policies that may need to be put in place to regulate this, AI, Yang replied that he definitely thinks this is necessary. He noted that as president, one of his proposals will be to “create a new department of technology and a new secretary of technology who is not an administrator, not a politician, but a real technologist that other technologists admire and respect. That person would be based in Silicon Valley, close to the action.”
