Secure technology is important to your business.

There are many things business owners need to consider when keeping their information safe and confidential. Beyond their own security measures, there are certain things employers should be aware of when it comes to secure tech use in the business. This means investing in new technology, looking into new software, and deciding if the particular software is applicable to your business/safe to use. Read on to learn about the importance of asking questions, getting professional advice, and learning from Google Nest Guard.

Google has recently been under criticism for failing to mention a microphone in their latest Nest Guard home security system. When major companies and tech giants introduce software to the market, most consumers assume it will be a safe and trustworthy product because of the brand name. In reality, that is not always the case. Even the best tech companies and forgo details on products, and forget to mention something we deem as very important. -IT World

The Nest Guard system is an alarm/motion sensor system that is meant for families to use in the home. As families would use this system, they trust the Google name, and would hope that bringing a security system into their home wouldn’t entail the system to monitor them with a microphone.

Here’s what Google said in a statement to USA TODAY:

“The on-device microphone was never intended to be a secret and should have been listed in the tech specs. That was an error on our part. The microphone has never been on and is only activated when users specifically enable the option. Security systems often use microphones to provide features that rely on sound sensing. We included the mic on the device so that we can potentially offer additional features to our users in the future, such as the ability to detect broken glass.” -USA TODAY

Though Google says the microphone component was not listed “by error,” this still raises awareness for all tech users when it comes to buying from trusted brands. The fact that the Nest Guard had a microphone and this was not listed on the box really upset some people. Even the best brands can force us to pose questions as to their intentions, mistakes, or misleading product information.

This really makes us think about the big picture when it comes to the technology and software we adopt, sometimes quickly and without hesitation.
