Protecting your Tech on Vacation

December 13, 2018 8:25 am

The holidays may be a time for many people to settle in with family and friends in front of the fireplace and have a staycation. For others, it is a time to spend a week or more somewhere tropical or away-from-it-all. If you are traveling and bring some of your tech with you, there are some steps you can take to ensure that it remains safe during your trip. Read on to find out more about protecting your technology while on vacation.

Before You Go

Prior to leaving for your trip, be sure to evaluate what you have stored on the devices you will be bringing along with you. Are there sensitive files that should be temporarily moved to the cloud or removed from the device? Once you have checked that all important files are backed up, you may want to also check that other data does not have sensitive information such as your photos, videos, online browsing history, and so forth. If you have the ability to set up “Find My Device” we suggest doing it just in case.

Once You Arrive at Your Destination

Once you land at your vacation spot, check in with your hotel or lodging site and ask about what protocols they have for safeguarding valuables. For example, is there an in-room safe or possibly a device check at the front desk? Either use these when you are not in your room or have your tech with you at all times. It is one more way to safeguard against theft.

In addition to using a safe or lock up location for your devices, remember that when you are using your device the Wi-Fi may not be secure. When you connect in the coffee shop, hotel, or other location with free WiFi, use a VPN to keep your data secure. Any data you transmit on WiFi is visible to anyone in the area. The only way to prevent this is to use a VPN. In addition, encrypt your data on your hard drive as another level of safety.

While away, you will also want to make sure that your tech and property at home remain safe. One way to do this is to stay off social media while you are away. Try not to advertise that you are away.
