New Year Tech Clean Out

January 14, 2019 8:51 am

How old is the hardware in your office? When was the last time you upgraded the software on your computer? Is your keyboard super sticky or glitchy? These are all signs that you are in need of a technology clean out this year. Here are some suggestions and tips on getting your technology clean, organized, and more efficient in the coming year.

  • Clean your equipment. This means the keyboard and monitor. Clean the dust out of the fan on your drives. Replace pieces that are too far gone and get all the debris/dust out of the crevices that could potentially be slowing down your computer.
  • Get rid of old equipment responsibly. This may mean donating it to a group in need or recycling it. Either way, make sure you have taken care of any data that may have been stored on it before disposal.
  • Check the health of your computer’s hard drive.
  • Commit to doing the updates that are suggested by your IT department. (You know the annoying ones that automatically pop up on your calendar or the desktop.)
  • Clean up your files. Store old files and come up with a systematic naming and backing up protocol.
  • Clean out videos, pictures, and presentations that you no longer need.
  • Restart all of your devices. This will free up resources and keep them running smoothly.
  • Update your Wi-Fi router to be sure it is secure and working at optimal level.
  • Clear your cache. This can speed up your system!
  • Delete unused apps or programs. This stuff is just taking up space and potentially slowing your computer down.
  • Install anti-malware software and perform regular reviews.
  • Review your password strategy. Change those that are not secure enough.

Spring may be a few months away but the new year is as good a time as any to check this job off your list. As always, if you have questions or concerns call M&H Consulting at 1-866 964-8324 or visit our website.
