If you’re a business owner, keeping your business secure is probably one of your top priorities. We’ve written in other blogs about many of the ways businesses are at risk from cyberthreats, but how can you keep your company secure from these threats?
Here are 3 tips for making your business more secure, and keeping your networks protected from cybercriminals.
#1. The Obvious: Passwords
As with any personal devices, accounts, or programs, having a strong password can make the difference between security and exposure.
While it isn’t necessary to explain what passwords do, it’s important to reiterate that passwords are often the final and strongest method of prevention, stopping unwanted people from accessing private information.
A strong password is typically at least eight characters, usually including special characters. Be sure to change your passwords at least every six months as well.
#2. Software Updates
Staying up to date on software updates is crucial to keeping your network and devices secure.
Often times, software updates are specifically designed by IT professionals to address exposed areas of your software that could allow easy access to your private information and data.
Falling behind on software updates will make it so the flaws in your system don’t get addressed, leaving you vulnerable to attacks.
#3. Educate your Employees on Threats
In order for an entire company to stay secure, each individual member of the company needs to be aware of threats and how to avoid them. And the responsibility for educating people on threats undoubtedly falls on management.
All employees at a company should know what types of harmful emails to look out for, websites to avoid, and links never to click. There are plenty of educational readings online regarding how to avoid malware and other damaging downloads, such as this article from CSO Online.
A cyberattack can wreak havoc on a company. While there are ways to regain control after an attack, the best defense to cyberattacks is, and will always be, prevention.
