We often get calls from our clients with issues ranging the gamut, from computers that are running slowly to scanners that refuse to scan! We also get calls about potential hacking events, ransomware attacks, and data disasters. Computer support problems can sometimes be easy to solve with the click of a few keys, whereas other issues take long, in-depth analysis of what went so horribly wrong. In part one of our blog, here are just a few of the quick fixes to help our clients with the issues that are somewhat common.
Computer Running Slowly
We have all experienced this phenomenon on occasion. Everything just seems to be taking longer to load, cue up, and even the cursor doesn’t seem to react as fast as usual. Here are a few troubleshooting steps to check before you begin to panic.
- Reboot the computer if you have not done so in a while.
- Close background programs that may have been left on, which decreases the overall performance of your computer.
- Close windows or tabs that do not need to be open.
- Use a disk cleanup program to delete any temporary files that are no longer needed.
- Check your security protocols to scan for malware, spyware, or viruses that could have been downloaded unknowingly and be slowing down your computer.
- Check to see if any software needs an update. Older versions can slow a computer down.
- Consider that it may be time for a memory upgrade.
Keyboard Not Working
While this happens every once in a while, there are some solutions that you can check before buying a new keyboard or, worse yet, throwing it out the window in frustration.
- Begin by checking the connections to your keyboard. Has it wiggled loose by accident from the input location or to the wall? If so, reconnect and you may have just solved the problem.
- Check the keyboard device on your computer to see if it is responding.
- Try plugging in your keyboard to another computer to see if it responds to rule out whether it is a computer problem or, in fact, a keyboard problem.
Wi-Fi Not Responding
This can be a terribly frustrating if you need to get online and can not access it when you need to. Here are a few things to check.
- Confirm that the Wi-Fi is turned on by looking for the indicator light.
- Make sure that you are trying to connect to the right router name (SSID).
- Confirm that the internet is working.
- Reset the modem and/or router.
- You may need to consider disabling a firewall in order to access your Wi-Fi.
- In rare occasions a router may need to be repositioned due to poor signaling.
