Chili’s Data Breach

May 18, 2018 12:00 pm

Chili's restaurant at nightLast month, we explored the data breach at Lord & Taylor and Saks Fifth Avenue that affected over 5 million shoppers. Well, the hackers are at it again, and this time the target was Chili’s Grill & Bar, the Tex-Mex style restaurant. To anyone who ate at a Chili’s restaurant between March and April 2018, and who paid with a credit or debit card, this data breach may have compromised your financial information. Chili’s only just learned about this data breach on Friday, May 11, 2018 and while it’s still too early to tell how many restaurants or even how many patrons were affected, let’s take a look at what we currently know:

What information was accessed

As we have just seen, Chili’s learned of a data breach in their system on May 11. Brinker, the parent company of Chili’s has posted on their website that no information concerning identity theft (e.g. social security numbers, dates of birth, etc.) had been compromised. Only guests’ financial information who paid by card in March or April 2018 are affected, though at this time we are unsure of exactly how many diners and how many restaurant locations were affected.

What you should do

If you happened to have dined at Chili’s in recent months, you would do well to monitor your bank and credit card activity. Report any suspicious activity or fraudulent transactions to your bank or other financial institution. Finally, as a last resort, you may choose to set up either a fraud alert or freeze your credit to stop any malicious criminal activity against you.
