In previous blog posts, we have explored different viruses, malware, and other threats and attacks on computers. Thinking back on this, it raised the question: can smartphones or tablets get viruses? Mobile devices differ significantly from desktop computers – websites are built differently for mobile devices than for computers. As such, is it worth a hacker’s time to build a virus for a mobile device? Let’s take a look:
What is a Virus?
Before we can begin to answer this question, we must understand what a virus is. A virus is a program that replicates itself in order to carry out a hacker’s deeds. A computer virus works like a flu virus in that is can spread from host to host. Additionally, as a flu virus needs a host cell to replicate itself, a computer virus needs a special program, such as a document or other file. A computer virus can damage the running software and can compromise data, which is what makes these attacks so scary for victims.
Viruses on Mobile Devices
Your smartphone is probably your most valuable personal possession. It has all your photos, contacts, social media accounts, and other things that matter to you. Because of the value behind these devices, hackers can enter through a compromised device and hold your files for ransom. But how can your mobile device be compromised? Well, chances are you’ve heard of the term “jailbreak.” This means to disable the software, freeing your device to be totally under your control. On a jailbroken device, you can uninstall built-in apps that take up storage, download apps and music that aren’t available on the app store or music app, respectively, and customize your device how you like, all outside the limits of your cell phone’s manufacturer. While many savvy users may reap the benefits of jailbreaking their device, doing so leaves the device vulnerable to viruses and malware. For example, a user may download a third party app that is not available in the app store without knowing who the developer is. The developer could be a hacker, infiltrating your phone and stealing your info once you download the app. And you would have no idea!
Protecting Your Mobile Device
It’s pretty simple to keep out viruses from your smartphone or tablet. Refrain from jailbreaking the device. It may be tempting to know that you can customize your device to your liking, or download apps and music not otherwise available, but this opens your device to attack. Instead, be wary of which apps you download by reading reviews before you install.
While it is a rare occurrence, mobile devices can be infected with viruses. As with protecting yourself from computer viruses, it’s important to stay vigilant and only download content from trusted developers. Additionally, update your mobile device regularly to further protect it. For all your security questions, comments, and concerns, contact M&H Consulting by phone at 1-(866)-964-8324.
