Is Your Smartphone Secure for Work Purposes?

August 20, 2019 10:24 am

In 2019, almost everyone works from their phone in some way. Whether you’re answering emails, accessing online project management systems, or viewing and editing client-sensitive documents, employees are often busy on their phones. The ease of access and simplicity of sending things off via smartphone are just unbeatable.

When employees have their work emails on their smartphones, they are always in the loop, and this greatly increases your productivity. Whether it’s a tablet, laptop, or smartphone, your devices should be safe and secure when dealing with your business information. Along with the ease of access, there are some security threats you’ll want to walk through before using your smart devices for work purposes.

Secure Access

When you log in to your device, be sure you have a pin number, fingerprint ID, or some sort of authentication in place. That way, if someone picks up your device, they can’t just log in and see your information. Be sure that you’re never saving passwords and you’re typing them in manually every time you log in. This helps to protect your confidentiality, even if you may think the worst would never happen to you. Consider if you left your phone at a restaurant, an airport, a client meeting or anywhere else. It’s your responsibility to protect your client information.

Automatically Locking Device

There are settings on every device to adjust fade time and screen fades details. This means your computer will fade to black and lock if you are inactive for a certain amount of time. For the best safety precautions, ensure your device locks after one minute of no activity. Any longer than one minute could greatly compromise your business if you walk away from a device and someone notices.

Security On Your Device

Installing security software helps protect your device against  viruses, malware, and other threats to technology. If your device is ever lost, the software helps you wipe the device clean so you don’t have to worry about it getting in the hands of the wrong person.

Open Wifi/ Free WiFi

When there’s free WiFi offered at a coffee shop, a mall, or somewhere you’re trying to access your business information/email, be sure you’re cautious. When you connect to these devices, you become searchable on the network, and your information is susceptible to hacking. Be mindful of your internet connection and be cautious of what you’re viewing and opening on your phone when you’re connected to these sources.
